India Launches Operation Sindoor: Military Strikes Target Terrorist Infrastructure in Pakistan

4 Min Read
SHARE

On May 7, 2025, the Indian Armed Forces launched a major military operation named Operation Sindoor, targeting multiple sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This operation was a direct response to escalating tensions following a deadly terrorist attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which India attributed to Pakistan-based militant groups.

Background and Context

The operation came amid heightened hostilities between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed neighbors with a long history of conflict, particularly over the disputed Kashmir region. The Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 Indian tourists, intensified calls within India for a strong military response against terrorist camps allegedly operating from Pakistani territory.

Details of Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor involved precision strikes on nine locations identified as terrorist infrastructure sites. These included areas in Pakistan’s Punjab province such as Ahmedpur Sharqia near Bahawalpur, Muridke city, a village near Sialkot, and Shakargarh, as well as locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir including Muzaffarabad and Kotli.

The Indian military reported that the strikes were focused on terrorist camps and infrastructure used to plan and execute attacks against India. The operation was described as measured and non-escalatory, with Indian officials emphasizing that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted.

Impact and Casualties

According to Pakistani sources, the strikes resulted in at least 26 deaths and 46 injuries, including civilians. Notably, a mosque compound near Bahawalpur was hit, causing significant casualties, including children. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, two mosques were destroyed, resulting in the deaths of teenagers.

Pakistan’s military claimed to have shot down five Indian warplanes during retaliatory actions and reported capturing several Indian soldiers. Heavy shelling and gunfire exchanges resumed along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing Indian- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Diplomatic and Regional Reactions

The strikes and subsequent retaliation have escalated tensions to the highest level in over two decades, raising fears of a prolonged conflict between the two nuclear powers. International leaders, including the United Nations Secretary-General, called for maximum restraint and urged both countries to avoid further military escalation.

The United States expressed concern over the violence, with President Donald Trump describing the clashes as “a shame” and hoping for a quick resolution. Other global actors emphasized the importance of diplomacy to prevent a wider regional war.

Strategic Significance

Operation Sindoor represents a calculated and forceful message from India aimed at deterring future terrorist attacks and signaling its resolve to act decisively against threats emanating from across the border. The operation also reflects the domestic political pressure within India for a strong response to terrorism.

However, experts warn that the escalation risks severe humanitarian consequences, particularly for civilians in Kashmir, and could destabilize the already fragile peace in South Asia.

In summary, Operation Sindoor was a significant military campaign launched by India on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation led to casualties, heightened military exchanges, and increased international calls for restraint.
