Jamie Vardy Blows Referee’s Whistle to Stop Leicester vs Southampton Match After Referee Injury

4 Min Read
SHARE

During the Premier League match between Leicester City and Southampton on May 3, 2025, an unusual and memorable incident occurred involving Leicester striker Jamie Vardy and the match referee, David Webb. The game was temporarily halted after the referee suffered a head injury, and Vardy took the initiative to blow the referee’s whistle to stop play.

What Happened?

In the 21st minute of the match, referee David Webb, officiating his first Premier League game at the age of 49, was accidentally struck in the face by the shoulder of Leicester forward Jordan Ayew during a challenge. Webb fell to the ground, clearly injured and holding his face. The collision was severe enough to force a delay in the game.

While Webb was down receiving medical attention, the match continued briefly, but Vardy noticed the situation and decided to blow the whistle himself, which was still in the referee’s hand, to signal for the game to stop. This quick thinking helped prevent further play while the referee was incapacitated.

Why Did Vardy Blow the Whistle?

Jamie Vardy later explained his reasoning in an interview with BBC Sport. He said, “I saw Southampton breaking down the left and with the ref down I thought I’d blow his whistle to stop the game!” His action was both practical and respectful, ensuring the safety of the referee and fairness in the game.

Aftermath and Game Delay

The referee received treatment on the pitch for about five minutes and attempted to continue but was unsteady. Eventually, Webb had to leave the field and was replaced by the fourth official, Sam Barrott. The game was delayed for approximately 11 to 12 minutes before resuming.

Leicester’s head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy commented on the incident, saying, “I felt sorry for the ref. He hit a brick wall called Jordan Ayew, and that’s not easy. Vardy blew the whistle to help him out. I hope he’s OK.” Van Nistelrooy also noted the physicality of the collision and the unusual nature of the stoppage.

Match Outcome and Vardy’s Performance

Despite the disruption, Leicester City went on to win the match 2-0, with goals from Jamie Vardy and Jordan Ayew. This victory was one of the few bright spots in a challenging season for Leicester, who were already relegated by that point.

The incident with the referee and Vardy’s whistle-blowing moment quickly became a talking point among fans and media, showcasing Vardy’s quick thinking and leadership on the pitch.

Public and Media Reaction

The moment was widely shared on social media and covered by sports news outlets, often highlighting the humor and humanity in Vardy’s action. Some saw it as a classic “Jamie Vardy moment,” blending seriousness with a bit of cheeky spontaneity.

The incident also sparked discussions about referee safety and the importance of clear communication during unexpected events in matches.

In summary, Jamie Vardy’s decision to blow the referee’s whistle during the Leicester vs Southampton match on May 3, 2025, was a quick and practical response to an unfortunate injury to referee David Webb. The action helped stop play safely and became a memorable moment in the Premier League season.
